One of the most popular stops on the European Poker Tour, the EPT Barcelona, began this week with 758 entrants buying in for €5,000 and playing their Day 1 A and B flights at the Casino De Barcelona. They created a prize pool of €3,790,000 with €825,000 to eventually be awarded to the winner and the top 112 players reaching the money.

The chip leader appears to be Spanish native Luis Rufas with 232,100 from Day 1B play. In second is Day 1A leader Loic Sa with 217,700. Notbles still in contention include Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier, Bryn Kenney, Bill Gazes, Liv Boeree, Johnny Lodden, Carlos Mortensen and Michael Binger

Last year's champion, Carter Philips, didn't make it through Day 1 this year, but has his parents flying over to meet him for a possible vacation together. Daniel Negreanu, who had quite the marathon effort to even play the event busted on Day 1B , as did Lex Veldhuis and Martin Horecki.

Combined Day 2 play continues Wednesday with 405 of the 758 players who began.
