Greg Raymer began his road to WSOP victory in 2004 as an unknown internet-qualifier, but today he is one of the most closely watched pros. Gregory Raymer was born in July of 1964 in Minot, North Dakota. After his family moved around a lot during his childhood, the town of Manchester, Missouri became his home, where he would graduate from high school. Later he studied law at the University of Minnesota Law School and Chemistry at the University of Missouri - Rolla. At the age of 28 he decided to take on a job as a patent lawyer. He worked in two offices for all of 6 years before noticing that 60-80 hour weeks left him no free time. So he ended up with a pharmaceutical company researching new medicines. He was led to poker by the fraternity Kappa Sigma, where he played the beloved game by night. It so fascinated him that he decided to earn a little money on the side of his studies. So with good cheer he went to the casino, however, he spent a lot just learning at first. For this reason he started working more intensively with poker theory before he again tried to make the leap to the casino. On his second run he didn't have any problems and Greg became a successful $20/40 player. In the poker scene, however, he was still unknown. He tried his luck at the WSOP with mediocre results. His poker star began to rise at the Main Event of the WSOP 2004. After qualifying online in a $216 satellite tournament, he eliminated one competitor after another. His risky, aggressive style unnerved a lot of opponents. For instance Greg was at the button trying to steal the blinds with T8o. The BB raised, but Greg went all-in and his opponent folded AJ0. In heads-up he emerged victorious against David Williams. The deciding hand was Gregs 88 against A4o, which brought him an unbelievable 5 million dollars. After this victory, he quit his job to play professional poker. In his private life, Greg concerns himself primarily with his wife Cheryl and daughter Sophie. Besides poker, his hobbies are golf, antiquing, and stand-up comedy. His greatest passion, however, is fossils. For this reason, he is called "Fossilman." A further characteristic of Raymer is his unusual glasses. They have extra eyes set in the lenses as holograms. He purchesed them during his trip to Disneyworld. These glasses were originally a joke to loosen things up at the table. But he quickly noticed that a lot of opponents were confused and made poor decisions. Since then, the glasses have become part of his poker game.

For some reason I don't like him. No, more likely, I am jealous of his success.

I rooted against him when he won in 2004. He is the real deal though as far as being a great player.
