Posted on Feb 14th 2008 - Subject: final table all in
just a question. I was asked if, on the final table, I had JJ would I go all in if top 8 got paid and I was lying 9th in chips. my reply was to call but nearly everybody else said to go all in. The player involved went all in and was beaten by a player who had the chips and only had q 6 in hand (with qq) . am I wrong in thinking that if the call was made the player had more of a chance of not being knocked out and could then go all in on after the flop and look stronger.

Depends entirely on your position relative to the big blind, your stack size, aggression of the table, as well as what sort of action is in front of you. If I am in early position with a large enough stack to survive the blinds for more than a few rings, than I would make a standard 3xBB raise. If I get pushed all in from late position, than I would probably fold, unless my read on the player was that he or she was very loose. If I was short stacked and in danger of getting blinded out fairly soon, than JJ is about the best hand I'm asking for and I'm looking for someone with Ax or Kx to double me up. If the table is fairly passive and players are quickly folding to try and make it into the money, than I am pushing and looking to take down the blinds, and hoping someone behind me doesn't wake up with a hand. If I am in late position and a few limpers have called the BB, then I am pushing and looking to take down the pot if my stack is large enough that they would have reason to fold and if I was short most likely still pushing since I would be blinded out fairly soon anyway. If there was a raise in front of me, than I would probably fold. Calling here is not a profitable play, since you are essentially looking to hit a J before you put any more chips in. If you are facing a raise, you are either pushing with JJ or folding, no calling. As mentioned before, if I had a decent chip stack and thought I could survive the blinds, I may be more inclined to fold JJ into a raise, since I don't like getting into all in confrontations with JJ. Those points aside, you need to read the type of players that are at your table and determine there level of aggression, what sorts of hands they are capable of raising with and whether or not an all in with JJ would get respect and take the blinds, or simply create a multi way action pot. If you can isolate one player into a heads up situation, than you are looking at a best case scenario, multi way with JJ you are looking at trouble. Each situation is different and you have to be able to analyze the best and worst case scenario to come up with the proper play. I am no advocating folding JJ, but I don't think you need to be calling with it everytime simply because its a top level pocket pair. In the end, your position, and stack size relative to the blinds will play the biggest determining factor in how you want to play the hand.
It's easier to fish if you're the one casting the reel.

I would look to be aggressive as it is normal for most players to tighten up on the bubble, but I would still be looking for position and some half decent cards. My decision with JJ would also depend on the action in front of me and who was sat behind me and the chip stacks, style of the other players etc.

sry bout dinner but i won 20 in the tourney

I do Agree , that if you are short stack you should put pressure by going allin , but be sure that its almost inpossible to not get called .So for me the rigth dicision was to raise half stack , and then allin after flop , problably like this its easyer to get away whith some winings . Remenber that some times folding may not be the best option till you see the river .
OK OK I FOLD!!!

HI, you said that first 8 places were paid and that you were 9th. Was this so called bubbleplay, or there were more than 9 players involved at the moment you had to decided whther to call or to go allin with JJ? If this was the bubbleplay, I would either fold my hand if I was in early position and let other players make a move and if possible kick someone out of tourney so I can be in the money, or I would call from late position if there are also some limpers hoping that I can hit the set on the flop. I f someone would raise me, I would fold. The only time when I would be going allin is maybe when nobody entered the pot and I am on the button or small blind!
