A little of both. The skill to know when to call, check, fold, raise (by how much, how quickly, etc.), push with the draw or let it go. And the luck to catch that draw. Or maybe the luck to catch the hand you were bluffing as having, meanwhile some fool can't let go of his low pocket pair that he was sure would catch trips on the flop. Heheh.

easy answer: you need both. every pro that has gotten to a final table at a large event will tell you that they've had some luck along the way.

on one single hand it is probably better to be lucky, over the course of a week, a month, or a year unless you are the luckiest person in the world if you have no skill you are going to lose money. in tournaments you have to have some luck...because if you dont and that donkey that is chasing his 2-outer to the river catches you are out. It doesnt matter how good you are if you get unlucky with all your chips in the middle. in cash games luck is not going to matter as much over the long haul simply because so what if the 2-outer chasing donkey catches on the river, simply reload and get your money back.

I think in tournament play you have to have some idea what you are doing (skill) and you have to have the luck to win the races. In a ring game it helps to be lucky, but a skillful player will come out ahead in the long run.

Every pro on the tour, says they'd rather be lucky than good, even Phil Helmuth says he would never lose a hand if it weren't for luck....

Any 2 cards can win you a pot. The skill part is what makes average players innto fantastic players. Reading the player,is he tight?,loose, aggressive? over aggressive? What hands did he take down pots with? Bluffing and the timing of bluffing in regards to your reads. Maintaining a table image and being able to "change it up" when the need arises. Where does he put his chips after he raises or calls a raise? or in case of online play how fast is he shooting them out? As a poker dealer I've used these "tells" and some I won't share, have made me a literal killing at games like 3-6 or 5-10 limit tables. Yes you have to be lucky, but using skill to help make luck happen for you is a powerful combination that will help your game hit the moon. cheers.jeff

If you're WSOP Main Event champion Jamie Gold, Joesph Hachem, Robert Varkonyi, etc., you have to beal real lucky. To be Daniel Negranu, Doyle + Todd Brunson, Johnny Chan, or any other big name pro, you have to be really skilled.

I THINK SKILL BECAUSE YOU DONT HAVE TO HAVE CARDS TO PLAY YOUR PLAYER IF THEY SEE YOUHAVE SKILL AND YOU MAKE A BIG RAISE THERE GONNA LOOK AT THEN FOLD EVEN IF THEY HAVE THE HIGHEST PAIR IN THERE IN HAND SO I'D SAY SKILL BUT IF YOUR GOING BY % THEN I WOULD SAY LUCK MY % ON TEXAS HOLDEM GAME I THINK IS 80% LUCK 20% IN THIS GAME
