Hellmuth faced an impossibly stacked final table in the $2,500 Seven-Card Razz event, event 18 of the 2012 WSOP. Among the final eight players were six bracelet winners with a combined twenty bracelets.
The gallery was packed as the final hand was dealt as throngs of spectators gathered around the table to watch history in the making. Half the crowd was rooting for Hellmuth and half against him, something he has grown used to, relishing in the roll of the villain.
The bracelet is a special one for Hellmuth in many ways. Not only did twelve bracelets become the new world record and extend his lead, but also this is the first bracelet Hellmuth has won in a non-hold'em game. The previous 11 all came in soime form of hold'em or another, be it limt, no limit, pot limit, heads-up, six max, full ring, shootout. He's done it all, but never in a non-hold'em game.
"I felt like I was supposed to win the Deuce-Seven last year, but Juanda played great." Says Hellmuth, commenting on his first non-hold'em bracelet win "I feel
like I was supposed to win the Players' Championship, and you know, Rast played great, and I just missed a bunch of hands. And I really thought I was gonna' win the Stud-Eight or Better two days ago. I kept seeing myself as the winner. So, I'm pretty pleased right now."
Hellmuth speculates that he will win another twelve bracelets in his career.
